Vintage East Orange General Hospital Volunteer Patch NJ Candy Striper History 3.5"

Vintage embroidered East Orange General Hospital volunteer patch featuring a blue and gold design with clasped hands and “East Orange General Hospital Volunteers” lettering.

East Orange General Hospital in New Jersey has an especially significant place in American hospital volunteer history. The youth volunteer movement that became known as the Candy Stripers began in East Orange in 1944, with the students volunteering at East Orange General Hospital. Period East Orange High School records document Candystripers continuing their volunteer work at the hospital through the 1950s and 1960s. ([Eopl][1])

This patch is marked simply “Volunteers” and is being offered as a general East Orange General Hospital volunteer patch rather than identified as an original Candy Striper insignia. Great piece of New Jersey medical, hospital, volunteer and Candy Striper-related history.
